30 Runs to Hard Mode: The Exact Mistakes That Kept Me Stuck on Normal

A beginner-to-intermediate log breaking down the four common traps in Sephiria: gold hoarding, overvaluing raw weapon damage, and ignoring defensive synergies.

When I first booted up Sephiria after hundreds of hours in Dungreed and Dead Cells, I arrogantly assumed I would breeze through the Normal difficulty tower within an afternoon.

Instead, I spent 30 full runs getting repeatedly crushed between Floor 20 and Floor 32.

Every time I died, I blamed bad RNG, awkward hitboxes, or enemy attack spam. But when I finally stepped back and analyzed my run histories, the pattern was embarrassing: my mechanical reflexes were fine, but my macro-decision-making inside the shop and upgrade rooms was fundamentally broken.

If you are currently banging your head against the wall trying to reach your first victory, here are the four mistakes that cost me dozens of hours—and how to fix them immediately.

1. Hoarding Gold for “The Perfect Shop”

In many roguelites, saving currency allows you to buy massive game-winning legendaries in late-game markets. In Sephiria, hoarding unspent gold through Floors 5 to 15 is borderline suicide.

Early floor shops often sell mid-tier green and blue artifacts for 120–180 gold (like Lizard Tail for recovery or Worn Iron Band for base armor). I routinely skipped these, saving 600+ gold hoping to see an S-Tier artifact later.

The Fix: Survival is compounded interest. An early +15 Defense or a 3% HP-on-kill trinket on Floor 8 saves you hundreds of cumulative chip-damage points. Spend your gold early to keep your health pool healthy, because entering boss rooms at 40% HP drastically shrinks your margin for error.

2. Obsessing Over Raw Weapon Attack Numbers

I fell into the classic beginner trap: seeing a weapon with ATK: 85 and immediately discarding a weapon with ATK: 48.

What the game tooltip doesn’t make obvious is that attack speed multipliers and special effect procs vastly outperform flat base damage. A fast weapon that triggers lightning bolts or burn ticks four times a second will out-damage a slow 85-damage heavy club by nearly 300% against mobile bosses.

Always look at the DPS profile and attack cadence rather than the single-hit number. Our Weapon Tier List breaks down each family’s true scaling curves for this exact reason.

3. Treating Evasion as All-or-Nothing

For my first 15 runs, I completely ignored evasion gear because having “15% dodge” felt unreliable. If an attack can hit you 85% of the time, why bother?

That logic was completely backwards. In Sephiria, evasion isn’t meant to replace dodging—it exists to mitigate accidental chip damage during dense mob swarms. Stacking just 25% to 35% passive evasion cuts incoming hallway damage by a full third, allowing you to save your healing potions for Floor 30+ boss arenas.

(Note: Don’t over-invest either—as proven in our Formless Dance build, actual dodge caps out around ~76% due to asymptotic diminishing returns).

4. Underestimating Movement Speed

Your base sprint speed determines whether you can walk out of a circular telegraph or whether you are forced to burn an emergency dash.

In my failed runs, I consistently picked raw damage over movement accessories. The moment I started prioritizing at least one +10% Movement Speed artifact, my damage taken plummeted by nearly half. You cannot deal DPS if you are spending every second recovering from knockdowns.

The Run That Finally Broke Through

Run #31 was my breakthrough. I didn’t get any lucky S-tier drops. Instead, I took a simple Sword & Shield route, bought two cheap defensive rings in the first shop, kept my movement speed above 1.10x, and played patiently around boss cooldowns. I cleared the final floor with two healing flasks to spare.

If you are stuck, stop chasing theoretical “one-shot” highlight reels. Build a stable defensive floor first, and the tower will crumble.
