Sephiria Beginner Guide - First Run to Endgame
Sephiria beginner guide: best starting weapons, how stats Miracles and artifacts stack into builds, meta-progression priorities and the jump to Hard mode.
Sephiria is a fate-defying action roguelite by Team Horay (the studio behind Dungreed): a bunny climbing a demon-filled tower, collecting weapons, artifacts and permanent upgrades between runs. The systems stack deeper than they first look — this guide gets you through the first hours without wasting your early resources.
Pick a forgiving weapon first
Your first runs should teach you the game, not punish you. Two community-consensus picks:
- Sword & Shield / Greatsword family — widely called the strongest beginner route. Special attacks carry damage, shields carry mistakes. The endgame Creaking Spine line has the lowest legendary dependence of any build.
- Tank Katana (Blade Katana + Guardian stat) — if you prefer faster attacks with defense scaling.
Save the glass-cannon routes (Biryuu crit, Ilonica caster) for your second or third weapon mastery. Full rankings live in the weapon tier list.
Understand the four layers
Every Sephiria build is four layers stacking on the same skeleton:
- Weapon evolution — each weapon line evolves twice (e.g. Katana → Cheongwangsak → Biryuu). The final form defines what your run wants.
- Stats — spread across attack stats (crit chance/damage, elemental schools), defense stats (Guardian, Will, Patience) and utility (Wisdom for MP). Builds target thresholds, not even spreads — e.g. ~60% crit / ~100% crit damage for crit routes.
- Miracles & costumes — your Miracle (Hunter, Duelist, Valet, Electromancer, Elementalist…) and costume set the run’s identity. Pick to match the weapon’s win condition.
- Artifacts — run pickups that do the compounding. Start with artifacts that boost what you already do (special attack, on-hit, freeze); a build you can pilot beats a stronger build you can’t.
First three runs: a checklist
- Clear the early tower floors with special-attack priority — reddit’s universal tip is that special attacks matter more than weapon choice early.
- Grab Absolute Ring-class special-attack artifacts when offered; they carry mid-game damage on almost every route.
- Spend meta-progression on survivability first (HP, defense), damage second. The tower punishes greed early and rewards it late.
- Bank one “rescue” plan: if a run stalls, pivoting to a documented preset (r/sephiria and the Steam build thread share codes) beats forcing a dead route.
When to jump to Hard mode
Clear the tower once on Normal with any weapon you understand, then take a verified 1.0 recipe from our best builds page into Hard. Hard mode is where Sephiria’s build depth actually starts — and where every claim in our guides got verified.
